From November 4 to 6, a delegation of about 20 researchers, post-docs and doctoral students from the Hebrew University's Einstein Center came to Berlin and presented their center's work, following an invitation from Prof. Christoph Markschies, the President of the Humboldt University in Berlin, and Prof. Jürgen Renn, the Director of the Max Planck Institute for the History of Science.
In the same Humboldt University auditorium in which Einstein used to give his lectures, the scientists from Jerusalem presented their research results in Einstein's disciplines - astrophysics, cosmology, the humanities and social sciences - to specialists and selected members of the general public.
The welcoming words by Dr. Annette Schavan, the Federal Minister of Education and Research, Prof. Hanoch Gutfreund, the head of the Einstein Center, Prof. Jürgen Renn, the Director of the Max Planck Institute, and Prof. Christoph Markschies, the President of the Humboldt University in Berlin, and the subsequent reception given by Prof. Jürgen Zöllner, the Senator for Education, Science and Research, showed how close the links between the
Einstein Center and the science community are. It also illustrated the prospects for additional contacts between scientists from both countries.
The ceremonial event also included the presentation of the Humboldt University's medal of honor to the 98-year-old writer Hans Keilson. He is an alumnus of the Humboldt University and the last living author whose works were banned and burned during the National Socialist era on account of his Jewish roots.
The three-day visit from the Einstein Center scholars to the Humboldt University was supported by the BMBF.
