Ethics and Human Rights

The Freie Universität Berlin and Hebrew University of Jerusalem seek ways to strengthen collaboration in human rights research.

Ethics and Human rights were the subject of a symposium, that took place at the Israel Democracy Institute in Jerusalem from November 25 to 27. The titel of the symposium was "Ethics and Human Rights in a Globalized World".

The event was organized by the Freie Universität Berlin and the Minerva Center for Human Rights at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem in cooperation with the Israel Democracy Institute. It provided young researchers and PhD students from Israel and Germany with a unique opportunity to discuss their research and to engage in dialogue with renowned researchers in the field of ethics and human rights. "We are very happy to have assembled so many renowned scholars and trust that our young participants will greatly benefit from this exchange ", said the initiators. And they added:  "We are also very honoured that Justice Aharon Barak will meet with our participants and we look forward to his keynote address."

The topics of the individual presentations featured diverse research foci and academic disciplines. Political Scientists, Law Scholars, Philosophers, Psychologists, Theologists, and Communication Scientists jointly discussed research topics such as the universality of human rights, strategies for their implementation, as well as focus on particular rights and discourses arising around them. The latter  included discussions on rights of women in post conflict situations, migration and human rights, social rights such as the right to food, the role of international criminal courts, and the interrelations between non-state actors and human rights.

As Professor Klaus Hoffmann-Holland, one of the initiators and member of the Faculty of Law at Freie Universitaet Berlin, stressed, thesymposium offered a first step towards a more structured research collaboration in the human rights field between Germany and Israel. "Our vision is to establish structures that will enable us to jointly supervise doctoral students and further foster our research collaboration in the future", said Hoffmann-Holland.

The event was embedded within the German-Israeli Year of Science and Technology and kindly supported by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research.
