Founded in 1986, the German-Israeli Foundation for Scientific Research and Development (GIF) began its activities twenty years ago, in 1988. Since then, GIF has been able to support (out of approximately 5000 applications) almost 1000 grants for joint German-Israeli research projects and 150 Young Scientists' grants for young researchers without a partner in the other country. GIF's capital of EURO 210 million after the most recent addition of EURO 50 million enables the foundation to allocate roughly EURO 10 million per year.
GIF has up to now organized over 30 bilateral scientific meetings with roughly 3000 participants.
GIF's 20th Anniversary will take place in Jerusalem in the week from 16 to 21 November, in connection with the concluding events of the German-Israeli Year of Science 2008 announced by the German and Israeli Ministers of Science.
The festivities will be based on 2 parallel scientific conferences on "Contemporary Migration" and "Brain Imaging" of three days each, an exhibition of books published in the fields of Humanities and Social Sciences with GIF support, a gala dinner and 2 full-day scientific plenary sessions.
One of the central themes being GIF's efforts to involve the younger generation in German-Israeli cooperation, the latter will amongst others present success stories by recipients of GIF Young Scientists' grants.
Approximately 200 distinguished participants from the two scientific communities are expected, notably the Ministers of Science of Germany and Israel, four Nobel laureates, the President of the Israeli Academy of Science, representatives of the MPG, the DFG - which will both also assist in the preparation and funding of this event - and the Helmholtz Association, as well as the majority of GIF's past and present Board Members, many of its distinguished scientific advisors and GIF grantees active in the regular and the Young Scientists' program.
